Gaults: Castleroe, County Derry
« on: Monday 05 September 16 00:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I'm sure you're all sick of seeing me on here, but I'm investigating yet another branch of my family!

My greatgreat Grandmother was Isabella (Bella) Gault from Castleroe, married David McCloskey, I can't recall the date but I do have the certificate somewhere.

Just wondering if anyone can help with further information on the Gault family, there are several Gaults that I know in the area who are probably relatives of mine.

I'm very interested in my grandmothers two brothers, David and Kennedy, as I heard they were killed in WW1. If anyone knew where I could look them up that would be a bonus!

Here is a link to the family in the censuses if it helps:

1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Somerset/Glenleary/1516916/

Thank you once again roots chat!

There can't be too many Kennedy Gault so this is more than likely him.
Kennedy Gault, Private, 21077, died 1/7/1916, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Thiepvall Memorial(Somme)
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/747908/GAULT,%20KENNEDY

There is a D Gault also with the RIF and with the service number 21076 which looks good if the brothers signed up together.
Died 21/3/1918 buried Grand Seraucourt, Aisne France. http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/579876/GAULT,%20D

60% of WWI records were destroyed during the blitz in WWII but you can search what does survive on Ancestry. (Needs a subscription)

You can search the Medal index here (results also on Ancestry)

The 'Ancestry' website has a page of information about what happened to Kennedy during the war  (also mentioning his brothers Robert and David) extracted from a book compiled by a Robert Thompson.

David Gault was only 17 years old when he died of wounds and his brother Kennedy was killed at The Somme although it wasn't until Sept.1917 that the family were told 'killed in action.' sadly another brother, Robert, saw Kennedy fall in battle was was unable to go to him. Their father died a few years later (22 Jan.1921).

According to one source*, the family consisted of Robert, James, David (born Glenleary), John, Elizabeth, Isobel, Henry & Kennedy and the children attended Castleroe School. The family were said to have attended Macosquin Presbyterian Church but the earliest Gault baptism there seems to be 1904 so the children must have been baptised elsewhere.

*daughter Minnie (Mary?) and daughter Annie not in that list.

In the 1911 census Thomas Gault had several grandchildren-
Alice born 22 Oct.1903 was baptised 22 July 1904 (mother Annie Gault)
Isabella born 4 Jan.1908 was baptised 6 May 1913 (mother Annie Gault) "responsibility taken by grandfather"
Macosquin baptisms also show Samuel, son of Bella, born 2 Oct.1914 baptised 27 May 1918.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Interestingly, the best 'fit' I can find for 1 year old Grand Daughter 'Maggie' in the 1911 census return is a Maggie Ann Gault born 5 August 1909, the address was given as Castleroe and the mother as Isabella Gault (child's father not stated).

Edited to add: There was also a Thomas Gault born on 20 May 1911, again the address was Castleroe, the mother given as Bella Gault, a domestic servant, and Lizzie Gault a sister was present at birth (child's father not stated). And in relation to the previously posted Samuel Gault (born on 3 October 1914 according to GRONI), the address was Castleroe and the mother was given as Isabella Gault, a servant (child's father not stated).
