Agnes GILCHRIST - who are her parents?

Hi,
Please can someone help me work out who Agnes Gilchrist's parents are? She appears in the 1851 and 1861 census living with Andrew White and his wife Agnes. And she was living with Agnes White in the 1871 census. The census says she was born in Kilwinning in Ayrshire in c.1847 and that she is the Granddaughter of Andrew and Agnes.
In 1871 Agnes emmigrated to New Zealand.

Would those records give any clues to parents ?

She emmigrated with Thomas and Mary Brown (I believe Thomas was her cousin). Doing a BDM search I have found that she married Thomas McKie in 1874 and died in 1880 in New Zealand.

Yes there's a Jean White born 11.7.1826 at Kilwinning who marries James Brown 11.7.1846 Kilwining

Andrew and Agnes nee Miller married Irvine 19.6.1819 seem to have the following children

Margaret 1822 m 29.4.1841 Kilnwining  William Watson

If that's right then Mary White must have been the daughter who was Agnes's mother and her firat husband was a Mr Gilchrist who died by 1852.
There's a Mary Gilchrist age 27 visitor 1851 at Kilmarnock handsewer to James Easdale which looks like her.

I, too, think you need her marriage/death certificates to find what is stated about her family.

There are a couple of trees on Ancestry that state her mother was Mary White, dau. of Andrew and Agnes but no source is given.   Mary White didn't marry until 15/5/1852 to a John Lindsay.

I did note on the census a John Gilchrist in Kilwinning so perhaps he was Agnes' father (he married the year before she was born).

I suspect that Agnes was illegitimate and don't know if you are aware but it was commonplace for illegitimate children in Scotland to have their natural fathers surname and not their mothers.

Unfortunately, although Kilwinning baptisms are available online (SP and familysearch) there is nothing there for Agnes either under Gilchrist or White so your only hope is that the marriage/death certificates for her include some family details to hopefully confirm that Mary White is indeed her mother.
