Louis (Lieb) KAPATOFSKY
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 14:16 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,
Having trouble finding when Louis (Lieb) Kapatofsky (1867-1936) arrived in the UK.

He was born in Poland and died in Manchester.  His wife was Dora Gleezer 1867-1918 and she was born in Poland.

With them would have been  the children born in Poland; Bertha 1886-1936, Samuel 1888-1919 and Barnet 1897-1940.  The fourth child Sarah was born in Manchester in 1901.
I am presuming they arrived between 1897 and 1901.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve62

If they were Jewish there are good records for the Manchester Jewish school.you may find Samuel and Bertha K.s school enrolment for the year they arrived .there seems to be a Samuel kapatofsky in Manchester workhouse in 1909 is that connected ?

Presumably Sarah's birth is the one registered as Sarah Capituski, Sep qtr 1901 Manchester.

Have you found the family in the 1901 census?

Barnet therefore looks to have been born earlier than you had thought.  He's 7 in 1901 and the free 1911 index suggests 18 then.

brigidmac  &  avm228,

bridgitmac
will look at those records for Manchester Jewish School.

Right for Sarah.  Surname has been spelt many differant ways.  Have the 1901 for 12 Billberry Street.  The part born "Russia - German Subject" probally due to the fact that parts of Russia/Poland were part of Germany.  There have been continual change over the years past.  One country incorporating another.  Just to add confusion.  The 1894/1897 for Barnett is my "arithmatic error" - sorry.
I do believe there was another route from eastern europe and that being Odessa, but no surviving records as far as I know.  Looks like there entrance in the UK is going to be a mystery.

Thank you both for your time and kindness.

Steve

You may find them on manchester rate books pre 1901 .my ancestors were Russian (Latvian)lots of anglicisation of names too. I found the wife in charge of a shop on some records . As the surname is quite rare my advice would be to use just surname on initial searches ..I was intigued that on the school records there were many children listed as Polish one year then only Russia appeared as foreign  origin on subsequent pages ....probably more to do with border changes .

Also sometimes port of departure was sometimes given as where people were from but may not have been their place of birth .

My great grandfather.s place of birth and year of arrival in UK was given on his alien registration card ....from WW 1 .

Transcribed on 1911 via Ancrustry as
"Rapatopky"
If you want to look.

Interestingly Sarah's future husband is boarding with the family.

brigidmac and Ray

brigidmac - Thanks for the info.  No mention in the London Register.  Manchester ones lost in the Blitz.  I was lucky when they demolished a Salford Police Station and they found a Register in the cellar for the 1940's.  I found the registration of Louis second wife, who was the widow of another part of the family Labisky/Goldstein.

Ray - This is what I meant by mispelling of the surname.  Another interesting fact was that after the Death of Samuel(Brother of Sarah) his widow married the cousin of Sarahs' husband.

Thank you both for your kindness
