WWI soldier mystery
« on: Thursday 08 September 16 08:44 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is a picture of Harry Thomas who came from England to Canada, to join the Army in WWI. He was too old to serve in the British Army, his age was 60 at the  start of the war. So he gave a false date of birth to serve in Canadian Army.
What information can you identify from this picture please,
Many thanks,

Brian

What is his date and month of birth . Was he married and where in England was he born.

Because he looks older than most soldiers someone must have needed their eyes checked

You can send to Library and Archives Canada for his military record. I think the cost is about $ 15.00
Canadian. They are always backed up so it might take some time to get .

If you need more help give me a shout.

Hi Tarn,

We will need more info to help you as Lily asks. Do you know where he was in Canada at the time of enlistment? Older fellas were allowed to enlist, my g-grandfather enlisted in his early 50s. Please provide us with the additional information, thx.

Sorry to say there is no more information about this soldier, except to say he died in a fire in New York.

Might this be the guy?  http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=262445  He was born England, but his address was listed as New York.

His cap badge could be Army Service Corps.       If he had previous experience in a relevant field, such as a Grocer  or Butcher  or Supplies and Transport,  then his experience could be valuable.   and youth and fitness may not be the primary  test of his aptitude.
