Think I prefer her as the landlady, in the other she looks like Nurse Cratchit.

Good find Erato.

I expect the script called for a Cratchit type character.  Still, not too bad looking  -  she was 69 in 1954.  Maybe she was wearing a wig or maybe she had no gray hair.  At any rate, it is not inconceivable that she could have been a chorus girl fifty years previously.

I tried looking into George Penrose's relatives to see if there were any clues on him.  This looks like stepfather James A. Ray on the death index - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKSM-HCQV  I can see a portion of James' obit on Genealogy Bank in the San Francisco Chronicle, but it doesn't look like George is mentioned.

Yes, that's what I think.  I found the death of James A. Ray's first wife and his subsequent remarriage in 1913 to a woman named Susan Doyle who was born in New York.  At the time of his first wife's death, this James Ray lived at 1616 Castro St., San Francisco - the address listed by George Penrose on his WWI draft registration.  And in 1920, James Ray was still living there with his second wife Susan.  On George Penrose's marriage, his mother's surname was said to be Devoe, but I think that must have been a mistranscription of Doyle.
