The many wives of William Sanderson
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 01:48 BST (UK) »
Hi people,

In tracing the life of William Sanderson (1798-187X) in Northumberland/Durham, I have found evidence of as many as three women that gave him children between 1825 and 1838 in locations as far dispersed as Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Bamburgh and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

The likelihood is that there are several William Sandersons in my data and that I am mixing their families together. But I am finding it very hard to prove that. There were certainly many William Sandersons in the north of England in this period. One was a mariner and one was a lawyer of some sort (in Bamburgh) and a third was a ‘husbandman’. There was even a ship named William Sanderson in operation in this area at the time.

I have tried to trace the lives of his (posited) wives but I can find no data on them.
() Ellen Gardener
() Isabella Amour
() Ellen Blackey who could also be Helen Blakey (or any interpolation of those names).
All women would have been born about 1800, in Newcastle UT or Bamburgh or Berwick UT.

I would like help disambiguating the marriages, which probably includes finding out where these women came from and when they died, and which of several possible William Sandersons they actually married.

I will provide below the data that I have assembled. Apologies that there is so much of it. I don’t expect you all to wade through it, but it is there for reference if anyone participates.

Some of this data comes from a previous conversation on the subject posted on Rootschat about a year back.

Thanks for your help, experts.
-David C

I think Mary was simply living with her uncle William in 1841. Adopted?

  • – Mary A Sanderson is a 67-yr-old visitor to her niece’s house in 1891. (Forster family)

She is from Berwick UT.

  • – 1859 daughter Elizabeth’s marriage cert.

Father (William Sanderson)’s occupation given as ‘agriculturist’.
I think that WS the mariner and WS the ‘agriculterist’ are two different people.

If this helps, here is the topic title under which we first discussed the wives and offsring of William Sanderson. There are a few details here that I did not list in the previous posting.

Topic: "Sanderson" children - Berwick Upon Tweed - 1824 to 1831

This is very confusing and, as you say, clearly is more than one William Sanderson.

Which of 'William Sanderson's' children are you descended from so that we can try and concentrate on just one family.

The William (mariner) who married Isabella Amour was - from various census - bc.1806/7 Gateshead, Durham so not a contender for someone born in the 1790's!

Ah, interesting (re WS the mariner born in Gateshead 1806/7).

I am descended from William's daughter Elizabeth Sanderson, for whom I have a birth certificate declaring that her mother was 'Ellen Sanderson formerly Blackey'. Elizabeth later had a son she named William Sanderson Coulson. So that is my starting point.

If we slice out WS (the Mariner) from Gateshead 1806/7, then that means we lose his daughter Margaret. Yet there is a Margaret in the 1851 census, sibling to our Elizabeth. This implies there is another Margaret lurking in the data or totally unrecorded. Is there some way to check local historic records in Berwick UT?

A question: MARY is just one letter different from MARK. Could it be that a transcription error has occurred?

Hi,

I have just signed after many months off the board and noticed that you are looking for a William Sanderson (are you still?)
I am a descendant of William "Anderson" Sanderson who was born in in Gateshead 1808 and married Isabella Amour b. 1807 in Heworth, Gateshead, Durham. William was also a Mariner. William and Isabella were married in 1828 and had their first daughter "Margaret" Sanderson who was born in 1830. Margaret didn't have any sisters just brothers, one of which was called after his Father William Anderson Sanderson born 1837 The family lived in the Ouseburn area of Byker as per 1841-1871 census . Margaret married a Mansfield Gibson in 1852 and moved to Darlington

Hello Mojo,

I wasn't aware that this question was still active after all this time.

We are descended from different William Sandersons.

Yours is the mariner who lived in Ouseburn.
Mine is a farm worker of more or less the same age who worked in a number of places in Nthbld.

Definitely not the same man.

Cheers
