Lewis Grant married the widow of John Campbell (Margaret) 1786 Edinburgh
« on: Sunday 11 September 16 16:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my Grant family roots back to the Strathspey area and have established that Lewis Grant born 1790 in Edinburgh had parents called Lewis Grant and Margaret. The following is a transcription of his parents marriage lines (from Scotland's People)

Can anyone help me understand the marriage lines:

"Marriages in 1786 20th January

Grant Lewies (Lewis) Pensioner and Mgt Grant, widow of John Campbell, late soldier of the 48th (or could be 78th) Regiment of Foot, gave up their names for Proclamation of Bans Matrimonial. "

Question: Does this mean that Lewis Grant was a pensioned off soldier??

How would I find out which regiment he was in?

Is there any way to determine the maiden name of Margaret his wife?

Thank you

His wife's maiden name was also Grant. In Scotland women never lose their maiden name. In legal documents even today an Ann White married to a John Black would be known as "Ann White or Black".

Yes, Lewis Grant was a pensioned soldier. You could see if any papers survive for him amongst the Chelsea records. It is perhaps very likely that he served in the same regiment as Margaret's late husband. If you post the section of the marriage register with the regimental number I'm sure someone here can read it accurately.

The 78th would be the 78th Highland Infantry or Regiment of Foot. see Wiki for further information.
