Thanks Mabel for that information - I would never have found that myself as I do not understand Welsh. I am creating a photo book using my parents photo collection and plan on incorporating family tree information and contemporary stories to make it more interesting.  Your comments certainly bring the data to life.
Kind regards

I won't suggest a quick visit to the archives or NLW then!

I am finally back to researching my Evans ancestors and am reasonably confident that I have the marriage certificate for my maternal grandmother's parents on 29 May 1884 at the Capel Mair Chapel in Cardigan. They were William Griffiths (23), a Farmer born in Tifosyficier? Manordivy and Mary Anne Evans (23) born in what looks like Penrallt Eifed Llangoedmore. I am trying to find Mary Anne's birth certificate (I am still not certain of her mother's maiden name but probably Jones) and have found two possibles. One in Cardigan and another in Newcastle in Emlyn, which was mentioned earlier in this thread. I have already obtained the birth certificate for Cardigan (ordered before the previous discussions) but as the father is described as a Police Officer, think this is unlikely to be the correct Mary Anne Evans. Before I invest another 6 pounds with the GRO, I am hoping that someone can confirm or otherwise where a birth in Penrallt Eifed Llangoedmore would be registered.

Thanks in anticipation.

I've done a welsh newspaper search for Penrallt Eifed which has brought up the report of the death and burial of Evan Evans aged 21, reported on 4 July 1884. He drowned in the River Teifi on June 18. He was buried in Capel y Wig (suggestion is this was the family burial location) and mentions he was a full member of the Capel Isaf independent church in Llechryd, where his father was a deacon. sadly no other helpful family background

The 1881 census confirms Penrallt Eifed as William and Margaret's family home, but also suggests both Evan and Mary Ann were born in Llangrannog. I note you've said "born in..." from their  marriage cert, but in the UK this records their parish of residence not place of birth, so looking for Mary born in the LLangoedmore area would be a mistake, I think..

Llangrannog comes under Newcastle in Emlyn - unfortunately there are quite a few Mary Evanses and Evan Evanses born in that period, and the new GRO indexes have quite a few with mother's maiden name Jones

Thank you Mabel and Cas for your assistance again. I will follow up on the information and suggestions. I have also used Google to translate the Welsh marriage notice - isn't today's technology wonderful? So many accessible resources - the problem is my brain goes into melt down every now and then and I forget what I was looking for ::)
