baby born on the Statesman from London to New Zealand 1863-1864
« on: Monday 12 September 16 21:19 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify the baby? The Statesman sailed from London on 27 December 1863 and arrived in Auckland on 6 May, 1864. The New Zealand Herald reported on 7 May that a baby had been born on the voyage but the baby's name was not given.

Hi Denisd, and welcome to RootsChat,

The full passenger list is here.
http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/passengers/passenger.html

The passenger list published in the New Zealand Herald on 7 May 1964 (page 3) lists parents with children.

I suggest trying to get hold of the original passenger list to see if a child is listed as born and to whom, or if not, which couple appear in either the New Zealand Herald passenger with a child they didn't leave with. ;)

Just looking on FindMyPast the only births at sea in 1864 for the Statesman was a male born Jan 28 to Anne HOWE. If I'm reading the entry correctly I think it says still born.

Sadly,I noticed in the article that Annie HOWE died on the voyage.

Just confirming Maureen's finds :

Yes, the entry in "Births At Sea"  for the male child of Anne HOWE on the "Statesman" 1864, has, entered in brackets, "(Still Born) - 28.1.64" [28 January 1864.]

And a further newspaper item > "Daily Southern Cross" (Auckland)
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/DSC18640507.2.5

states ... Mrs ? (looks like) Anne HOWE who died on 22 February ...

The earlier newspaper article gave her age as 28 years.

Can't see a passenger list image for the "Statesman" voyage of 1864 (May arrival) ... probably the listing at aucklandcity site has been compiled from information found in newspapers ?
