George Henry Byatt NEWLYN: born c1837 Jersey (??)
« on: Wednesday 14 September 16 16:15 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Researching this gentleman has ended in total failure :'(

The facts as I know them are few and simple:   He was sentenced to 7 years transportation on 06/04/1850 at St. Helier for burglary and theft.   My last sighting of him was being sent to Pentonville Prison on 03/09/1850.   He does not appear to have been transported.    There are some references to a George Henry NEWLYN in the Bristol area, correct age, but no seeming means to confirm same person Yes or No.

Any help most welcome please.

the one in Bristol on the 1871 census is a painter and his place of birth is given as Gosport, Hampshire.

His marriage in 1865 to Maria Dunn shows his father as Daniel

so this baptism in 1834 looks likely

Does this help eliminate him? Daniel's marriage was to a Mary Byatt in 1819, so perhaps not?

Good Morning Osprey,

Thank you.   I am extremely grateful.

You have certainly opened an avenue of possibilities which I have not had a chance to explore yet.

For the moment,

The prison records on Findmypast seem to indicate that on 3rd Sep 1852 he was received at Parkhurst Prison (Isle of Wight), aged 16 years (probably his age at sentence), serving a 7 year sentence for burglary from 6th April 1850. It states he was discharged 11th May 1854 to Portsmouth.

There is a further entry (11629) made by Miss Ann Newlyn of Aberney (?) House, Belmont Road St. Helier. It's difficult to work out what the entry is about but it could be that he's in a lunatic asylum and his release has been refused. There is no date alongside the entry but other entries have the date of 1854. I may well have misinterpreted the entry as there are no headings on the page but is worthy of further investigation.

There is an entry for a George Newlyn for larceny 28th Feb 1861 in Reading. Whether this is the same person is unclear.

Hope that helps.

Stewart

1851 census shows Ann B Newlyn 23 dressmaker b. England as a visitor in St Helier. I suspect she is his sister being economical with her age?

other siblings for George Henry
Charles
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NR2C-ZP8
Richard

Mary

Jane
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J9DB-F3T
Edward
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5SV-89Q

There's a possible for Richard in 1841, if he is the Dick Newlyn in St Helier Goal!

Charles Edward appears to marry in Clifton in 1852, so perhaps that's why George Henry turned up in Bristol.

Hello Stewart,

Sadly, the records are all over the place and I have a copy of the original Parkhurst Prison Register as a prime source (TNA HO24/15, Page 108 for George Henry Byatt NEWLYN).    That states he was received from Millbank Prison on 03/09/1850 and transferred to Pentonville Prison on the same day.  But FindMyPast records seem to show that he was transferred from Parkhurst Prison on 11/05/1854 to Portsmouth Prison ??? ???   Parkhurst Prison confirms his age as 13.

By the way your reference to (11629) somewhat confuses me, as I am not sure about the source of the citation...........researching FindMyPast leaves me frustrated!!!

For the moment

Osprey,

Thank you for all the details.

The posting by "Hill" is interesting and if I can sort out the prison records correctly then hopefully everything will fall into place.......says the "Eternal Optimist" ::)

For now,
