Can anyone identify this Eltham family?
« on: Monday 19 September 16 15:19 BST (UK) »
On 5 Sep 1921, the "Osterley" arrived in London from Brisbane. On board was Mrs Eltham and family - 4 children, (no forenames given on passenger record). They had boarded at Port Said Egypt. Mrs Eltham was 32, the children were:  male 11, female 8, male 6 and female 2. Their intended address in UK was c/o Embarkation officer Tilbury Docks. On the entry is Sgt Eltham crossed out and his age 34 crossed out, so presumably passage was booked for him,  but at the last moment he didn't travel with them.

Can anyone identify the family, please
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Thank you, I had wondered about him, the date he was in Egypt seems to make it a certainty. His birth year is a bit puzzling. If he was 34 in 1921, it should be 1887, but I have his birth registered as Q3 1890. I have found an Arthur Eltham occ tailor military journeyman on 1939 register dob 4 July 1889 not 1890. The occupation fits with him being a tailor on army record. He's  10 on the 1901 census (down as Arthur Rose), which would be right for someone born in July 1890.

I have his marriage as 25 Oct 1910 at Folkestone.

I would not worry about dates of birth in 1939 register they were not always accurate.

It looks as though Dorothy did not die until 1955
Deaths Dec 1955
Dorothy Eltham age 64    Folkestone reg dist    5b   550

He was obviously waiting to remarry
This ties in with that pre ww2 record you found  ::)
Marriages Dec 1955
ALLEN    Elizabeth R    Spouse ELTHAM
ELTHAM    Arthur
Surrey N.E.    5g   926

Thank for finding those, I had looked for a death of Dorothy and remarriage of Arthur pre 1939, not thinking he and Dorothy may have separated and the lady he was living with in 1939 was not actually his wife at that point. The child with them (born in 1933) is registered as Eltham in Q1 1955. The same registration is added by hand at the bottom of the relevant page in Q2 1933 (where it should be) with a reference back to M55 (Q1 1955). It says mother's maiden name Eltham which isn't right.

This whole part of the family is very confusing. Arthur's mother Jane and her two sisters had 9 illegitimate children between them, including Arthur.

I think I've found his original registration in Brentford district - Ealing reg district wasn't created until 1947. Surname Allen mother's maiden name Allen, so it looks like she wasn't previously married.

I noticed that duplicate birth registration on freebmd.  The Allen registration certainly looks promising as well.
