Help with occupation please
« on: Tuesday 20 September 16 04:29 BST (UK) »
Hi
Could anyone help me with the occupation of John T Orchard in the attached page of the 1881 census for Kentish Town.  I believe John was living at the Training School in Wilkin Street but I can't make out what his occupation was.  It's "school ke.....".

Any help gratefully received.
Regards
Kerrie

What was his occupation in 1871?

Was he living at the same place?

Could it be School Keyman, maybe a name for what we would now call a Janitor?

I think it could  be this. On the census they were the only people living at the school so maybe it was just used during the day and not residential

John Thomas Orchard was a cutler in 1871 and 1861 in various parts of London and in 1891 he had moved to Hendon where he was a grocer.

I don't think the word is Keyman or Keeper but thanks for the suggestions.  I'll attach a bit more of the page for comparison.

thanks

Although the B doesn't look like some others, I'd like to suggest School Bursar.
As a grocer he'd have the accounting ability to balance books.

It is difficult to tell because the l of cleaner in the line below encroaches.  My vote would be for School Purser (possible spelling variant for bursar).
