Many thanks, MaecW. That sounds a bit more hopeful. According to George Redmonds the family of Broadley derives from John Brodelegh, Constable of Ovenden, near Halifax in 1362 when he built Broadley Hall, named after the place Broadley Lathe. He did not previously have a surname. George Redmonds says that the Broadley family is single origin and is quite distinct from the Bradley family who are much older. The problem is that as the family of Broadley grew there often was confusion bewtween the Broadleys and the Bradleys. (There is also an unrelated Irish Broadley family.) Halifax bought its wool from Lincolnshire to make their kerseys so it's easy to imagine clothiers sent members of the family to live where the wool was produced. Thank you again, claytonbradley
