Eddyshaw, Eddishaw, Hithershaw, Hithersay?
« on: Wednesday 21 September 16 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hello. Can anyone help with my name dilemma? My maternal ancestors family name is Eddyshaw mostly from around Nottinghamshire. However, searching through census records this name changes to; Edyshaw, Eddishaw, Eddeshaw, and Hithershaw. I am aware that this is because of the illiteracy of my ancestors and their names being transcribed phonetically.
My Great (x4) grandfather is John Eddishaw bn1759 he married Elizabeth Wright in 1784 in Arnold, Notts. However, before going any further along the wrong route, I wondered if anyone had solved the problem with the name? Did Eddyshaw become all of the above spellings and was John's father's name actually 'Hithersay'?
Many thanks

I checked NFHS there are 6 marriages listed in Arnold for 1784, none of them for John **** or Eli** Wright
There is this one
Nottinghamshire
Nottingham
St Mary
Marriage date   18 Jul 1784
Groom forename   John
Groom surname   HITHERSHAW
Bride forename   Elizabeth
Bride surname   WRIGHT

There is only 1 baptism 1759 +-10years for Hithershaw
Arnold, St Mary
14-11-1762 Charles son of John & Mary.

Calverton, St Wilfrid
Hithersay 25-12-1749 John son of Joseph & Mary father a stockiner.

Marriage Calverton
13-4-1746 John HITHERSHAW and Mary Bush.

Burial Calverton
13-4-1764 Joseph HITHERSAY stockiner.
seems the name could have been interchangeable.

Hope this is a help.

Hi

Thank you for responding to my post.

I will look at your information soon. I just wanted to respond to you. But, I am going to be on holiday over the next couple of weeks so won't have a chance to look at it and unpick the information you sent. However, I will look at it thoroughly when I get back.
Thanks again
Bridget
