Which website for online family tree ?
« on: Thursday 22 September 16 22:40 BST (UK) »
I want to put our family tree online so all the family can access it. But which is the best website?
I tried Ancestry but don't like their layout - it's far too large and spread out - and all that scrolling around is quite tiresome.
Is there a website which has a nice compact view? like PAF, for example, where you can see a family group of 3 generations, with dates/places etc at a glance.

I believe Familysearch now takes family trees.

But be careful and make it private, with only your designated persons able to access it.
Or you might find info 'lifted' just like people seem to do with Ancestry trees.

Yes, I had thought of posting it on FamilySearch, Dawn.
But I checked with FamilySearch and the trees on their site are "collaborative" - i.e. one big family - so anyone can apparently make changes or merge trees, and I do not want that to happen.
Same goes for trees on Geni.
There are several errors in some branches of our tree that have been perpetuated in many of the online trees, and I do not want to risk having those errors included in my tree. My favourite error was a son who was born 15 years after his father died !!

You can have a tree on Tribal Pages without having to pay a subscription, it is private unless you invite someone to view it, you have to give them a password for them to gain access.

I agree with Jebber, Tribalpages is my choice. The security level can be set to your needs, from open to all through to so secure you cannot find the site yourself. I know this because......

Jebber

If your subscription is not renewed though you cannot edit the tree, as I have found out, when I wanted to change something.

OK ignore the last comment, I have just tried again and it has let me do it--senior moment folks sorry  8)

I too recommend Tribalpages, so easy to use & navigate as well as being free.
