What was the religious affiliation of this family? There are some image sets (i.e. NOT name indexed) of church records on familysearch. Multiple churches in Johannesburg and surrounds, and no guarantee he was baptised soon after birth, but this is the most likely place to find him.

I have no idea what religion the family followed. I assume they were Presbyterian or Church of Scotland, but I don't think they were particularly religious.

Hi, I saw his army records dated the 7th September 1914.
Age 20years and 180 days.
The 12th of March that would be.
What ever the date is,  work back and you get the date.....it's a forces thing!
They go from January to December.

I took my socks off and with toes and fingers got to his date of birth as being 12th March 1894. Unless anyone knows different.

Thank you shirl27. David's father was Alexander and he was a builder so your first reference could well be them. They were in Dundee in both 1891 and 1901 so the dates fit.
I was in Johannesburg a couple years ago and found three Scrimgeours in the telephone directory but didn't go the extra step..

I was researching my family history when I came across David Scrimgeour and his footballing past. David is my great-great uncle and I was actually trying to find out about his elder brother Alexander.

I am in the process of looking at old football match reports and can see that David played for Portsmouth reserves - I've yet to find out if he broke into the first team.

I know his nephew- my grandfather- was a Dundee fan so it would be interesting to know what they thought of his time at Dundee Hibs!

As an aside I found out that David's brother Alex had a couple of run ins with the authorities which were reported in the paper!

Hi David Scrimgeour was my maternal grandfather. He played for Portsmouth in the 1913/14 season and was a striker, but regularly had a shoulder injury taking him out of the game. He joined the army in 1914 and was posted to the Armaments factory in Newcastle, presumably because he was a mechanical engineer. After the war he went to Calcutta as an engineer in the jute mills where he died in 1937.
Alexander Malcolm Scrimgeour was a bit of a tearaway I think. I have some newspaper cuttings of his encounters with the police together with a grainy newsprint picture of David playing for Hibernian before his transfer to Portsmouth.
