John Henry Bertie Gardner 1889 Dulverton
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 15:53 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of John Henry Bertie Gardner born 2nd March 1889 Dulverton, Somerset (date from 1939 register and death) He died March 1971 in Taunton, Somerset.

He married Ellen May Carro 5 Sep 1914 in Rockwell Green, Somerset and on the marriage certificate his father is given as John Gardner a farmer. I can't find the family on any census, which is odd.

I know the obvious answer would be to get his birth certificate, but as this is for a tree that Greensleeves and I are working on for a friend of hers, we don't want to do that unless really necessary.

Can anyone see a baptism or the family in 1891 or 1901?

NB: He's not the John Gardner with father John from North Petherton.

Thanks.

Sadly can't find anything  :(

Tried just looking for John born Dulverton 1889 and the only slightly odd one is a 2 year old boarder in 1891 but he is called John May so unlikely :-\

Plus your John has a birth registration so not like he was adopted and changed his name.

Can't even find him in 1911  :-[

It's really odd isn't it, you'd expect to find him in at least one census wouldn't you?

Hi Carol - I think between us GS and I have tried most combinations of spellings! FindMyPast have his birth, marriage, 1939 and death, but nothing else. Same with Ancestry. I was hoping that someone on here might see what we've missed.

Looks as if we need to tell her friend that if she wants us to go further back on this line we'll have to get the birth certificate.

Not a lot of help I'm afraid Maureen - Marriage was 5th Sept 1914 and he was a bachelor, occupation Railway Porter. His address on the certificate was 117, Rockwell Green (same as the bride's address). Witnesses were Henry Carro, Edith Carro (bride's siblings) Charles Manley and Eva Williams.

That's a good possible isn't it - but where was he hiding in 1881?

I've found a John Gardner who was born in Oakford Devon, working as a servant in Dulverton in 1861.He was aged 16 so born about 1845. RG 9; Piece: 1606; Folio: 64; Page: 6

Thanks everyone for looking.

There's a service record for a John Henry Bertie Gardner , aged 18yrs 11 months , born Bampton, Devonshire, farm labourer. Enlisted 11 August 1906 Royal Regiment of Artillery and discharged 1908.

Next of kin :
Father John Gardner , Ashford Farm, Sampford Peverell , Tiverton, Devonshire
Mother Elizabeth
Sisters Lily & Alice

I know you said Somerset , but I can't find a Devon birth for this man. I can see this man on the 1911 in Wales but that's as far as I've got and have to go out for a bit.

Might be a red herring !
