I always use this website for old registration numbers:
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-letters.htm

It omits registrations after 1972, so it is very good for older registrations.

Thank you KG.

That is an interesting list to have. Am I correct in thinking that this CH registration number could not have been issued later than May 1931 but would have stayed in use as long as the owner kept that motorbike? So the photo could also have been taken in the 1940's or possibly later.

Does anyone have an idea of when the photo might have been taken? Could it be into the 1940's?

The bike may have been sold to a new owner during those seven years, possibly.

Hi Sami,

Lovely photo.
My hubby, a motorbike enthusiast of more modern bikes , dates this bike to early 1920s and thinks it's either a BSA or a Triumph.
I would say the photo was taken during the 20s. Certainly not the 1940s . The girl's clothes do not look 1940 + .

Looby :)

Hi ScouseBoy:

Always possible, but considering my Mum had a photo of this couple, then I think they must be relevant to her. Thanks for looking.

Hi Looby:

Thanks for that, gives me more leads to have the photo dating to the 20s. I had no sense of when their clothing would date to. The clothes seem fairly non-specific although I did wonder on the head gear the driver was wearing.

Sami,

2 of the replies I had;

"CH seems to have been issued by Derby council between 1904 and 1931 which is not much help! At a guess the bike wasn't new when the pic was taken but clothes suggest 1920s"

ADDED: That would agree with Looby's thought on clothes dating.

"The motorbike is almost certainly a 1923 Triumph Ricardo - but if not that that make/model, the fuel tank is of the style that most motorbikes built between 1920-28 had. The helmet is basically a soft leather one worn originally by WW1 pilots, so that would be right for that era. I've seen a number of pictures of bikes, from the '20s with number plates consisting of two letters and four numbers"
