FRANCIS HOUSEBOAT Teas Lunches Cafe ✔ MUDEFORD area
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hello!

Any ideas please as to the location of the

FRANCIS HOUSEBOAT Teas Lunches

Painted on the side of this "vessel" is FRANCIS HOUSEBOAT / TEAS & LUNCHEONS. Banner by door reads "Entirely under new management". Quite a sandy beach (or  mud)?  Across the other side is a town. There's a large taller building well above others ( Lancing College?). Could this be in the Sussex area?

What do you know about this houseboat?!

With thanks~001uk

As far as I can remember, beaches in Sussex are mainly pebble, or shingle?

I wonder if it is an estuary rather than a beach.

Does this look familiar?

In which case (name change aside!) we could be looking at Hengistbury Head.

 :o :o :o

I would say that's definitely a very good match, The link says locations of  Hengistbury Head, Southbourne, Bournemouth, Dorset, presumably it moved around?.

^snap!  :)

"Four generations of Derham family life is bound up in this half-mile of sandy beach.......His is a sprawling fishing family whose ties with the area stretch way back. The Avon Beach chapter begins with his grandparents, who lived on a houseboat off Mudeford sandspit, which stands across the water. Victor's grandmother started an informal cafe from the boat during the late 20s"

Is this the place - the headland on the left looks very similar to that in your original photo?

Thank you Spidermonkey (and matthewj64 & jess5athome) for solving the whereabouts. Sussex was just a floating idea which you sank. Interesting back story (which is very often the case with these old images).

The teas are on me.
