john eveleigh- convict to nsw
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 21:27 BST (UK) »
hi, im wondering if anybody help me with john eveleigh, born 1815.

john was transported to new south wales, australia on the ship Emma Eugenia.
he was tried at dorset county sessions on 10 march 1837 for highway robbery.
john was sentenced to death, but was transported for life instead.

im trying to look for FREE convict records so i can see if he is my john eveleigh or another born the same time.

my john eveleigh should be the son of john and elizabeth, and was baptised at Ottery st mary, Devon, on the 13 january 1815.

thanks in advance

The assault took place in Whitchurch C’anonicorum  - there are Eveleighs in that area including a John who was baptised 1818.

The John Eveleigh who was transported was from the parish of Chideock - but not sure if it means he was born there or lived there immediately before the offence.

I can see John senior wife Elizabeth and several children in 1841 Chideock but no John junior.

And as Whitchurch Canonocorum is only  2 or 3 miles from Chideock, he is the more likely perpetrator than John Everleigh all the way from Ottery.

Although I can't see the Ottery John in any census either.

thank you for your replies. ( i only got a notification for the first one)

my john is definitely baptised in ottery st mary, and father john is still in ottery in 1841. mother elizabeth still thereabouts in 1861.

i guess the john who was transported was one of the others born around that time. :)
