Alexander Campbell
« on: Monday 26 September 16 13:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find some information on Alexander Campbell born about 1790 ish in North Ireland.
The only information is he was a farmer was still alive in 1850(when his Son James Campbell got Married)

His Son James Campbell I have lots of information but still cant find his birth or who was his Mother.

James Campbell was born in November 1816 in Garvagh Londonderry.
James was a weaver until he enlisted in the Army in 1835 in Coleraine for 46th south Devonshire regiment.
James was in the Army until 1855 was a Sergeant when he left .
James married Hannah Walker in Scarborough 1850
And had 10 children from 1854 in Ireland to 1872 in Hovington in Yorkshire.

Alexander Campbell I don't know who he married or if he has any more children

Been on lots of genealogy website and the irish records are not as update as would like them to be

Based on the townlands, I doubt that either Will is for this Alexander Campbell.

The village of Garvagh is in two parishes- Errigal and Desertoghill which means a variety of possible churches the family might have belonged to (and not all records are complete or online). Unfortunately you haven't indicated what religion they might have been but I suspect Protestant rather than Catholic.

There were various Campbell families in the area and I did find a baptism for a Hannah daughter of an Alexander Campbell in 1814 (unfortunately there's a gap in 1st Garvagh records 1816-1822). There are many errors in this set of online records but I'm not at home to check my own transcripts which were done from the originals rather than from photocopies.

Kurin or Kewrin, just outside Garvagh, is in Desertoghill Parish.

However, weavers at that time could have moved about a bit and later with the decline in the linen industry changed occupation to farm labourer, etc.

I should have added earlier that the 1831 census for Co. Derry does survive but gives limited detail- townland, name of head of household, number of males and females and number by religion. Here's Alexander Campbell in Kurin- 3 males & 2 females (all Presbyterian)-

When I get home I can check my files for information which will not be online.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Had a look for Campbells in Kurin and I do have some old records but nothing for Alexander.
