What does OBC mean on sailing record from Liverpool to Bermuda
« on: Monday 26 September 16 22:31 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters.

Can anyone tell me what O.B.C. means please? It is shown on the attached transit document. The people leaving England from the Port of Liverpool in 1927 are planning to make their permanent homes in Bermuda.

I wondered if there was some sort of resettlement program or other reason indicated by the letters O.B.C.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thank you ScouseBoy. The column heading is Country of Last Permanent Address, in which England is checked, and then the bracket with OBC.

Thank you Carol. Does "Of British Commonwealth" used in this context mean anything other than they are moving from one Commonwealth county to another?

Not sure but I have it down as an abbreviation when I was looking for ancestors on passenger lists some time ago. The other one I have is Other British Country.

Looking at the passenger list, it must be something to do with the port of disembarkation. At the bottom of the page the totals are OBC: 14 from England and 2 from the Empire which matches those due to land at Bermuda, and FSA: 5 from England and 2 from Scotland, which matches those due to land at Havana and  Iquique

Thanks again Carol. I appreciate the observation from you to ShaunJ.

This is slightly off topic,  ;) but perhaps you can share some insight on another item in this record. The line for Ferguson indicates he came from G'gors in England. I've Googled that in a variety of ways, but can't find a place name that comes close. Might you have any ideas on that?
