Dublin Workhouse 1890 & Ward's Cottages 1892 and 1895
« on: Tuesday 27 September 16 18:08 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with my gt grandmother who was born in a Dublin Workhouse

Bridget Reilly was born 29 Aug 1890 (birth register states 'in workhouse') to Mary Brady and George Reilly of 58 Church St. She was baptised 30 Aug 1890 in St Paul's.

What I would like to know is:
*Which 'workhouse' exactly would this have been?
*If her father's address is given (58 Church St) does that mean then that it was Bridget and her mother only in the workhouse?
*Is there a possibility that Bridget's parents were not married at the time of her birth? They went on to have two more children (not born in the workhouse)

The other two children, Mary Ann (born 29 Dec 1892 - 17 Wards Cottages) and Christina (born 26 Dec 1895 - 16 Wards Cottages) Can someone tell me where exactly and what were Wards Cottages

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated
Jacqui

Workhouses usually had a hospital attached so she may not have been an inmate of the workhouse just went in with a difficult birth.

This is good Dublin City Council has a photo of Ward's Cottages.

Hi Sinann,
Thank you. I never thought of that.
A poignant photo, to say the least.  I saw another of his showing Angle/Angel Court (off Beresford St) very sad and thought provoking
Thanks again
Jacqui

I'm trying to find Ward Cottages on the OSI mapviewer.
The 1911 Census has it under Arran Quay, working north from there I'm up to the North Union Workhouse, still have not found the Cottages but I see a Ward bridge near the Work house. I think I'm gone too far north though.
I'll look a bit more

Ah ha they are off Church St.

I see that now myself. So was Ward's Cottages/Church St any where near a workhouse and which one?
I see too that the Parish is St Michan's and yet Bridget was baptised in St Pauls

Can't find them, there is loads of little groups of houses with no names.

Some where in this area.
Church st. runs from Whitworth bridge up to May Street.
I would think Ward's Cottages is somewhere on the left hand side. ie behind Arran Quay. (Which of course is where St.Paul's Church is)

St Mitchan's would be the Civil Parish I think. I'll check that out a bit.

Have another look at Bridget's birth cert. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1890/02410/1898464
NDU is written above workhouse, all the certs on the page have it.
Stands for North Dublin Union
Which is north of Arran Quay
