Mary Copley c1831
« on: Tuesday 27 September 16 19:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am researching my maternal ancestors who are The Lee family and Rose family mainly in Calverton and Hucknall.
My gt gt grandmother is Mary Copley c1831 from Arnold. Mary married Edward Rose in 1850. Her mum appears to be Eliza Copley and her father's name isn't mentioned on her baptism or marriage certificate (I have a copy of this). I found a marriage for Eliza Copley to a Thomas Marriott and wondered if Mary was illegitimate and Eliza married Thomas after Mary was born. And, did Mary take the name of Marriott after her mums marriage?
Any ideas people??
Many thanks

Hi,

Would this be the Copley/Marriott family on the 1841? -

Thomas Marriott   79
Thomas Marriott   33
Eliza Marriott   28
Ann Marriott   12
Mary Marriott   10
Sarah Marriott   4
Elizabeth Marriott   2
William Marriott   2 Mo

All born in county

There does appear to a gap between Mary and Sarah. I can see a baptisms for William and Elizabeth but not Sarah.

Have you found a baptism for Ann aged 12 as she could also be an illegitimate child of Eliza.

Hi Sarah could be the baptism 6th November 1836 St Mary Arnold Thomas/Eliza?

Ann could be 29th May 1829 St Wilfred Calverton Thos/Mary, but that would require a death for Mary prior to the marriage of Thomas to Eliza Copley in Gedling All Hallows 7th July 1834?

Thank you for your responses.
I found the marriage record for Eliza to Thomas Marriott in 1834 and then found the 1841 census record. I didn't search for Ann's birth record but assumed that if the dates matched up, she too must have been illegitimate.
I will look at the information that have both given me and look into this further.

Thanks again.

It's some years since I went over this, but I think your original interpretation is correct, ie Mary is the illegitimate daughter of the Eliza Copley who later married Thomas Marriott. I'd not previously seen Sunflower's information of a Mary Mariott burial but that is consistent with Thomas remarrying later in 1834, and with Ann being the daughter of Thomas and Mary.

The next generation back on the Copley side is also problematic. There apear to be 3 Elizabeth Copley baptisms, children of (1) William & Mary, 1805, (2) William & Ann, 1812 (it's the same Williiam) and (3) William & Ann, 1817 but a multiple baptism so possibly born earlier. I have never found a death for (1), but I believe (2) is the wife of Thomas Marriott and (3) married Samuel Wright in 1833. This last is supported by 1841 census data giving her birth year as 1815.

William is my 5g uncle

Hi everyone

Thanks for the help with this.

I have recorded Eliza marrying Thomas Marriott on 1834 & the prev marriage of Thomas to Mary Woodward. I found a birth for Ann Marriott to Thomas & Mary - so I have recorded this too.

For the present time I am not going to research Eliza Copley's parents - will look at this in near future.

Thanks again!
