Conroy Edenderry Parish
« on: Wednesday 28 September 16 04:05 BST (UK) »
Am unsure where to look for  RC Parish  Edenderry baptism records. My GGrandfather John Conroys army papers state he was born in the Parish of Edenderry near Portadown County Armagh. He states he is 18 when he joined up in 1854 in Portadown. I have been looking at Catholic Parish records on the National Library site but Edenderry Parish is listed as County Offaly. Am unsure if I am looking in the right records. His parents were Michael Conroy and Mary Haggin or Higgin. He marries in Portadown in 1884 to Jane Rainey who was his second wife first being Ann Maloney. Not sure when the first marriage was or what happens to her. Can someone help re parish Records I should be looking at.

Edenderry isn’t a parish. It’s a townland. In fact there’s 2 of them in Co Armagh. One in the civil parish of Seagoe and the other in Eglish. If your Conroy ancestor lived near Portadown, I’d guess that he lived in Seagoe. So search Seagoe RC records. (According to the PRONI guide, they only start in 1843, but earlier entries may be found in Tullylish. So try that too. They start in 1833).

There's a death of a Anne Conroy in 1883 in Lurgan registration district, aged 45, who could be your John's first wife.  These images are not yet online, but hope soon so you can confirm.

The death certificate will, however, be available on GRONI's site for a small fee.

Thank you all for that information. It will be a big help to know the correct Parish Elwyn. Will get that death certificate as well for Anne Conroy and see if that's his first wife so thanks for that as well Eileen.
