I don't KNOW they came to NZ !

Just when couldn't find a mckay - love marriage in Scotland

And there was 1 in NZ
And there seemed to be a birth of Mary Hart Mckay at right age ..I wondered if it was too much of a coincidence

I know My

Mary Hart Mckay was in Scotland because that's where my grandmother and sisters were raised.

But I do remember my grandma saying there were 2 Mary McKay MacDermid s with same birthdays
They did sometimes marry cousins

How common was it to use surnames as middle names ??

How common was it to use surnames as middle names ??

I really don't know the answer to that without engaging in a lot of research on the matter.  ;)
I do have it in my wider family for both male and female ... and two of my own children have surnames as middle names.  ;D

Sometimes though a person might retain an original surname (e.g. if they were born out of wedlock and their birth was registered under their mother's maiden name.)   If the parents later married, then the child's new surname was often added after the surname he or she was already known by.

*  Have you tried to get help with finding your family on the Scotland Board here ?

[It's a bit difficult for us in New Zealand to try and help with the Scotland side of things - many of us don't have the "local knowledge" needed, nor necessarily the subscriptions to fee-based genealogy sites. ]

Yes I will have to ask this topic be transferred

I am looking on SP and have some credits left on there but am not finding them on census in Scotland

Now have correct husband for Mary Love it was Donald mckay b1850 son of Donald Mckay b1819 and Mary Hart1819

Donald and Mary Love had 8children born between 1870 and 1884

This info comes from an old family tree I don't know how accurate and have not found corresponding records yet ....just finding way around updated Scotland speople site

Thanks for all the NZ help

I have the C1911 for  Charles +Mary (nee Hart  mckay)Stevenson

They are living in shelleston Lanarkshire Scotland

With Mary Margaret and Isabelle

And a boarder John mckay also a coal miner

Mary aged 28 was born in Lanarkshire others all born more precisely in the Shettleston area

So it rules out her parents being in NZ

now let's see if Scotland spells site can help me find the Love /Mckay back to 1818 ancestors on other censuses

C1891 has Donald mckay aged 68
Mary 66.   I think this is our Mary Hart born 1819   tho dates a bit out

With grandsons Donald McPherson aged14

And
Donald Mckay aged 12. Could be son of Donald Mckay and Mary nee Love  b .1850

Living at old engine house

I have been trying to work back through my grandma's family tree  that I was given
I know that her mother Mary Hart Stevenson was still alive in 1957 cos I have a photo

she celebrated golden wedding with ex coal miner Charles Stevenson both born 1878

Their marriage cert says they were living at green...?? St and Cantyne ? St
shettleston
His parents were William walker Stevenson and Mary Blane

Mary Hart McKay.s parents were.       Donald mckay            Margaret ms Love

Both born around 1850 according to family tree .but that had her mother's name as Mary

Which led me to a possible  marriage and inbirth in  NZ ....  .so there is a post on forum there

I have now found some information about Margaret Love .she married Donald Mckay in june 1878

He was an engine keeper son of another Donald mckay engine keeper too and Mary Hart

She was daughter of William ?  Ileg  Margaret love  both deceased
witnesses Isabelle love Dougal mckay

I can't link Mary Hart mckay  born 1878 !  and Margaret mckay b @1850 to earlier censuses

Can't read Mary Hart Stevenson place of birth in 1911 census but she settled in Shettleston with her husband and 4 daughters including my BMW

Any help gratefully received. ...I've dismissed some of the censuses because father's name does not correspond but maybe he went by middle name ??

The NZ post has been transferred to Lanarkshire

Threads merged

I think Margaret love may have been from Ayrshire  a 1871 census has a 19 year old servant in lands but born in Ayrshire and she is living with her widowed mother Eliza also born  Stewerton Ayrshire but other siblings born lancs

In same household is her grandmother margaret McKie   could be related to our McKay's I've not seen original
