Eleanor, Thomas or Mary Astley in 1841 or 1851 in Lapworth?
« on: Friday 30 September 16 13:33 BST (UK) »
IGI says that Eleanor Astley, daughter of Thomas and Mary, was baptised in Lapworth in 1836. She married William Hickin in Lapworth in 1855 (FeeBMD) and I have Ellen Hickin (26), born Lapworth,  in the 1861 Census in Lapworth. However, I can find no trace of her or her parents in 1841 or 1851, at least on Findmypast. I suspect a possible problem with transcribing and wonder if anyone with access to an alternative website might be able to help,

Thanks,

Dave

There's an Eleanor CHESSHIRE born Lapworth 1836 with parents Thomas and Mary in 1851.
Two siblings-Joseph and Thomas (age 9).

Thomas seems to go on to marry with the name Thomas Astley CHESSHIRE. ???

Hi Maureen,

Many thanks, the names and ages look very suggestive, but goodness knows what has happened with the surname. I can see that "Hasley" could be "Astley" mis-transcribed by the enumerator, but I can't see how to reconcile the Chesshire part!

Hi Dave,

I can't figure out the CHESSHIRE part either unless Mary has just taken up with Mr CHESSHIRE. I don't see a likely marriage for them.

Young Thomas is a bit of a mystery as well. I don't see a birth for him under any variation of either name. ::)

Isn't Family History fun? ;)

Brother Joseph marries as ASTLEY Dec Qtr 1858 Solihull to Hannah HAYES.

He's on the census records as CHES*RE.

Just noticed that the marriage image for Eleanor is on A*try. (transcribed as Wen ASTLEY.)
Her father's name has been written as Thomas CHESHIRE. The CHESHIRE has been crossed through and ASTLEY written above it.

Many thanks Maureen.

I wonder whether Mary was married to Thomas Astley and had Joseph and Eleanor, and that she was then widowed and soon re-married? co-habited with? a Mr Chesshire, coincidentally the same age and forename, and that they then had son Thomas. (But why then no record of these events?).  ???

I did lose the children of a different family and it turned out that the two oldest children were listed as if the children of their step-father (in 1861), after their widowed mother had re-married, but were listed under their baptised names again by 1871.

Dave :)

While trying to bring something to the party (& failing) I noticed this Baptism in Lapworth:
20/2/1841 Thomas Artley s. of Thomas & Mary. Thomas' occupation is labourer.
Looking at the image it's Astley.
Coincidence or not further up the page there's a Baptism for a Mary Chesshire with parents Thomas & Mary. He's a farmer.
& a possible Baptism for Mary:
Lapworth 9/6/1805 Maria dau. of James & Eleanor Cheshire.
I mention this as she had a daughter Eleanor. The only anomaly is that in 1851 she gives her POB as Beoley or maybe Bearley.

Not her, she married Samuel Greswold in 1829.
