Need search advice and tips please.
« on: Saturday 01 October 16 12:44 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm helping someone with their search for their family and am just looking for some advice or tips on one part. The person I'm looking for details on is deceased, but there are possible living people involved. I'm not going to give names on here but I know that the individuals name, occupation, that he was married by 1930, (dont know spouses name) lived in Omagh. All else that is known is a daughters name and her husbands name (I have no idea whether these two are still alive).

I've identified a marriage in 1927 that is the right name but the name is not extremely uncommon and the occupation doesn't match. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could find further details. Are there any directories, electoral rolls or other things like that for the 1930's? Or cemetery records, obituaries that may give some clues?

I'm not trying to trace living people just confirm this gentleman is the one I'm after (hard I know with limited information) and then search back his family.

Any tips or idea would help. Cheers, Holly

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Do you know whether any of them  moved to the UK  mainland at any time?

Have you searched for the names on the 1939 register?

Have you sent off for a copy of the marriage certificate?

Thanks Hallmark I'll check that out and try that link.

ScouseBoy,

Not sure, but don't think any of them moved to the mainland at any time.

I didn't know the 1939 register covered Northern Ireland. Where can I find that?

I have a copy of the marriage certificate that could fit him. It lists him as a labourer. The info I have on the man I'm looking for was that he was a blacksmith.

Cheers, Holly

Sorry, I do not know whether the 1939 register covers NI,   but you could search  for Date of birth and name in case any of them had moved to England and Wales.

My Great grandmother was born in Fivemiletown, her name was Mc Coy

The 1939 register only covers England and Wales.

Thanks scouse, unfortunately I don't have names and dates of everyone and it's unlikely that they were in England or Wales

Thanks Carol, I thought that was the case, but wasn't sure. Would be useful in this case if it was for NI.

The daughter may have died in Leitrim 19th November, 2003. I'm trying to find more now.

You could try GenesReunited as you can search for living people there.

I'll have a look there, but we aren't really looking to contact living people. The father had an affair and had a child from that. We aren't trying to impact on the family, just find out information about him and his ancestors so that she can know about the family she never knew.
