Maria Carter
« on: Sunday 02 October 16 11:57 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anybody please tell me what happened to Maria Carter, the niece of Thomas Jennings. She was mentioned at his trial for murdering two of his children in 1845 at Reading. I can't find her after that.

Do you know who Maria's parents were? Thomas Jennings was married to Amy Fritter, so for Maria to be his niece, her mother either had to be a Jennings or a Fritter before she married a Mr Carter

I've now found a marriage for a Sarah Fritter to a George Carter in Thatcham on 14 Oct 1824.
Could be the parents.

Sarah Fritter was born Thatcham 1801 and she could be the one living Chieveley in 1841, she is age 40, with James 13, Eliza 11, Maria 8 and John 3. Maria's age matches her stated age of 12 at her uncle's trial.

Sounds about right. I wonder what happened to her after the trial. I have found a marriage for a Maria Carter to a William Walters, 1856/June/Newbury/2c/355, which could be her. I will have to see if I can find them in the census returns.

I also found the Maria Carter / William Walters marriage, but that says her father is John. In census returns she was born Chatham, Kent and looks like she was the Maria bapt 5 Sept 1832 in Chatham to John and Hannah.

Looks like William and Maria in 1901

Just checked my notes and she apparently served 2 months in prison, for stealing a dress in Great Shefford, in 1849. Could have been in Reading Prison but I haven't been able to confirm that.
