Douglas John Bowler 1919 - 1944
« on: Sunday 02 October 16 20:07 BST (UK) »
Douglas Bowler was killed in Italy in September 1944 whilst serving with the 58th Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery.  He was born in Kingston, Surrey in Q2 1919 to Henry John Bowler and Mary Anne Bowler but I cannot find his parents on Ancestry.  The birth index gives his mothers maiden name as Bowler which I guess is a mistake.  Any help gratefully received!

He was married at Emmington, near Thame in 1940 and I have found this in the Parish Records, and the baptism of a daughter the following year.  He married Beatrice Joyce Fry and again I am having trouble finding out anything about her although the CWGC register says she was from Tetsworth, Oxfordshire.

There are Bowlers in Thame, Postcombe and Lewknor nearby so he may be linked to them and that is how he came to meet his wife.

Any info or thoughts on ways to progess would be most useful.....

Freebmd also have his mother's maiden name as Bowler

Births Jun 1919
Bowler    Douglas J    Bowler    Kingston    2a   570

However, I can't find a marriage for a Henry Bowler to a Mary Anne.

You should be able to find Beatrice in the 1939 register (sadly we're not allowed to find her for you)

That will give you her DOB and lead you on to her 1920 birth, not anywhere near Oxfordshire!

I looked at that birth earlier, but wasn't sure as I couldn't find her in the 1939!  Skoyen89 you can find that birth easily on Freebmd.  ;)

Hi Carol
Thanks for this - found her in Newton Abbott.
I am a relative newbie to family research and am struggling with two parts of this....what (and where) is the '1939 register' and 'sadly we are not allowed to find it for you' - could you help me understand please?

Thanks Groom.  I had found a couple of other Robert G Fry last night but coincidentally both had married an Isabel!
Interestingly her father was given as a 'Pottery Manufacturer' in the wedding register.  Given that Douglas John Bowler seems to be from Kingston, Surrey and she was from Newton Abbott I am intrigued why they are marrying in the little hamlet of Emmington in Oxfordshire!?
