Identifying a coat of arms
« on: Sunday 02 October 16 21:54 BST (UK) »
Any help would be appreciated.  It appears to be an "HMS" or some variant of the three letters.  Thanks all!

I'm afraid I don't think that this is a coat of arms.  It does seem to be a number of letters entwined -someone's monogram perhaps.  And there might be a large number of people with those letters as their initials.

Probably not what you wanted to hear  :-\

Welcome from me, too! ;D

I agree with Nell.
It's not a coat-of-arms.

No not a coat of arms.
I can see a small S between an H, the other scrolls look like just decoration.
How big is it?
What is it made from ,metal, wood ,terracotta, stone?
It could even be Harrow School--now there`s a thought.
Where did it come from?
You`ve got us all wondering now!I might not get to sleep tonight  ;D      Viktoria.

Thank you everyone for the help. I actually found this on the banks of the Missouri river in Bellevue, NE in 1975.  I was 10 years old and searching with a metal detector.  It is about 2" x 2" and it made of steel.  It appears to be very old and shows some surface rust.  It is very heavy. There are no other markings. Obviously a stylized cipher /monogram of some kind.  Either SH or HMS.  Any other ideas?

Dan

Is there anything to show it might have been attached to anything -horse harness- such as a loop?
Any significant events around that area, Civil War  for example .
Could  it be from a tractor ,harvester , farm vehicle ?
I did nod off eventually!Viktoria.

What a great find.  This is a monogram.  The last name would be the H.  The first and middle names would be NS.  Many people, including members of my family, went by their middle names so the initials could be SMH or MSH.  Since you found this along the river, there is a very good chance it was washed down river by a flood.  That makes it next to impossible to locate the owner.  You could take it to the university or a museum and they actually have machines that can scan the object to determine the age of the object.  Good luck and keep us posted on what you discover.
