There is a Whitesmiths (or blacksmith and whitesmiths) index around somewhere.
Saw it years ago (like 20 or more).
I think it may be on-line.
If you are lucky someone will have submitted the man to it.
I submitted mine and several others I ran across.

Genealogical Society of Victoria has CD-ROM indexes that include St Luke's Chelsea
so other libraries / places probably do too.

By the way the Chatham baptismal records in 1790's deal with "irregular" baptisms
ie those of adults or born out of wedlock by not putting the surname in front (in the margin?)
but all the details including father's name (if known) in main text.
Harder to find but they are there.

Disappearing quickly before those who "beat" me up previously find me and do so again.

Many thanks for all your replies folks.

Especially grateful for the information about the marriage record image on FindMyPast of Ann's second marriage. I had missed that.

The image shows her father is William Cock but unfortunately no occupation. Hope he is deceased rather than fictitious!

It is Ann Cock and Henry Aldridge I am most interested in and so a little progress has been made here....... thanks so much.
Best wishes HL

Have you seen the 1851 census. Says Ann was born in Reading, Berkshire. Joseph's occupation was Whitesmith, same as on his marriage cert.

Ian C

Yes, have images of both of those now and they tie together nicely. A bit confusing though as on the 1841 Joseph says he is a retailer of beer. I know I have the right 1841 as Ann's sons George and Benjamin Aldridge are living with them.

Perhaps he was having a career break in 1841 :)
Best wishes HL

Some of my ancestors on the 1841 census suddenly became brewers/retailers of beer.  I asked an archivist about this and they said people just used to make their own beer and sell it from their front room or at their front door.  Apparently it was quite a common thing, although if lots of people did it, I wonder if they sold enough to make any money.

Wow, that's interesting Lizzie. Thank you  :)

I'm sure it's the right family but was bemused by the sudden career change.
Best wishes HL
