Oh? Where did you come across John? There's no John among the children listed in the various census, and there are eight children without him - Alexander, James, Barbara, William, Margaret, Annie, Mary and Walter.

Of the eight, one died before the 1900 census. This has to be either James or Margaret because there are records of all the others in 1900 or later.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Ah! That's the birth date mentioned above for Walter Montgomery Scott. Was Walter originally John? Or were John and Walter twins? Because if so the census is wrong, twice, about how many children Annie Young had had.

Interesting how every answer raises at least two new questions!

So it is funny not seeing a birth for Walter Montgomery Scott if they were twins surely two births would have been registered  ???

Yes. Between that and two censuses saying that Ann had had eight children, not 9, I think John and Walter Montgomery must be the same person.

(They do say that three bits of evidence are sufficient :) )
