Edmund Maher from Cashel

I have traced Edmund Maher - son of James Maher and Mary Butler.  They lived in a place called 'The Grove' .  My problem is I have 2 date of birth for Edmund.  The one that relates to James and Mary is the 21/4/1870, however according to his age on his death certificate in Scotland his year of birth should be 1885.  Can anyone shine a light on this one?

Who was the informant on the death certificate. A discrepancy of a few years is understandable but 15 years is a big difference.

Do you have the death certificate or are you just going off the results of a basic search on ScotlandsPeople?
If I enter just Edmund Maher's name I get the death in 1961 but if I also enter his mother's maiden surname there is no result. Of course the informant may not have known it.

His son Edward registered his death.  I know his father James died in 1907 but I am unable to trace his mother Mary Butler after this.  I can find a copy of the register of his birth on 21/4/1870, which would put his age at death as 91 but on the certificate it says he was 76? I was beginning to wonder if i had gotten his original family wrong, but through my searches I have come across some distant relative who have the same information.

Forgot to say that when Edmund married Winifred O'Neil in 1914 in Glasgow his mother was still alive.

Do you have his marriage certificate? This may help in sorting out his birth date.
Married Winifred O'Neill 1914. His name recorded as Edmond.

Yes I do.  His age on the certificate is 29, which would make his birth year as 1885

There are four shipping records for Edmund Maher born 13 September 1885. He is travelling between South Africa and England Status married, Occupation - Manservant.
Address given on sailing record 1955 is The Walnuts, Pinkneya Green, Maidenhead Berkshire
In 1956 on the ships manifest his birth date is 10 September 1885 Still a manservant at the same address.
1948 manifest age 62,nobirthdate given occupation - Valet. Same address
1952, age 66, no birthdate given. occupation - manservant. Same address

On FreeBMD there is a birth registration for an Edmund Maher Dec 1/4 registration district Salford
which would fit with the man in the above shipping records.
He is on the censuses with his parents James (born Ireland) and Rose (born Liverpool)
In 1911he is a butler in Berkshire but not at the address in the shipping records.

This Edmund died 1961 Maidenhead registration district.

So there are two of them knocking about.

How could your Edmund get away with a 15 year age difference.
