Baptism 1805 Richmond upon Thames
« on: Friday 07 October 16 08:29 BST (UK) »
Have found a parish record that states Mar 1 1805, Sarah daughter of William and Elizabeth (illigitimate) ... Walter.

Does this mean that Sarah Walter is the illigitimate daughter of Walliam Walter and his partner Elizabeth who may or may not be his wife - ie maybe wasnt wife at birth of the child but is William's wife now.   Or that Sarah Walter is the illigitimate daughter of Elizabeth Walter and a man named William but fathers surname not provided ?

Cant find any record of a marriage for the same church for this couple in 1804 05 or 06

There is a marriage between an Elizabeth Walter and a William LANNAY in 1809 in East Molesey which is only 4/5 miles from Twickenham where the baptism took place. they went on to have several children in Kingston (even closer): Pamela 1809, Henry 1811-3, William, 1812, William 1814, Eliza 1814-18, Isaac 1815, Mary Ann 1816, Eliza 1818. If the first Mary Ann was theirs, she must have died before 1816.

It is interesting to see that there are five illegitimate births on the same page in the Twickenham registers; and three of them name the father but only give one surname.

Richard
