Kent: Cornelius BRYANT, Born 05/12/1836, Woolwich. Kent
« on: Saturday 08 October 16 16:43 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Cornelius BRYANT joined the Royal Navy on 17/06/1856 (Service No: 29601).

He may have joined at Portsmouth having been released on licence from Portsmouth Prison on or about 30/04/1856 (the date on which licence granted).

Can anyone help with any details for him after he joined the Royal Navy please.

Thank You,

BAC3

There is a Cornelius Bryan being admitted and discharged from the Northumberland Street, London, Workhouse in 1874.  Have you completely ruled him out?

Who were the parents of 'your' Cornelius Bryant?

Good Morning

Thank you for the Crocodile information, extremely helpful, as it now lends some credence to the possibility he may have been in the workhouse later on in 1874.

I cannot find any family details for him pre-1856 ???

From the 1852 Old Bailey transcript:

"THOMAS CAMPBELL (policeman, R 146). I produce a certificate of Bryant's former conviction at this Court—(read—Convicted 11th June, 1849, of stealing two pair of boots, and confined six months)—he is the person, he has been summarily convicted since then."

In 1849 he was convicted as Cornelius Brian, then aged 12.

" 1362. EDWARD WILLIAMS , CORNELIUS BRIAN , and WILLIAM PAGE , stealing two pairs of boots, value 5s.; the goods of James Cooper.
DENNIS COLLINS . I am in the employ of James Cooper, a bootmaker, of Woolwich. On 28th May I saw Brian take two pairs of boots from outside toe shop and run away—he passed them to Williams, who ran—I ran after bio, and found them on him (produced)—they are my master's—Page walked off with Brian.
WILLIAM CURTICE . I saw Williams running, wrapping up two pairs of boots in a handkerchief—Brian and Page were about two doors from the shop—they saw him taken, and ran down the alley—I knew Page before. WILLIAMS— GUILTY . Aged 14.— Confined Four Days and Whipped.
BRIAN— GUILTY .* Aged 12.— Confined Six Months and Whipped

ShaunJ,

I had managed to find the earlier June 1849 indictment that you quote below, after much slow trawling through the Old Bailey records.   And with much delight, and anticipation, armed with the alternative "BRIAN" I thought post-1856 would open up for me with all family details etc......nothing!! (chempat please note)  Will I never learn genealogy is all about brick walls :'(

Nevertheless, thank you for help......much appreciated.
