18 Goldsmith Street, Dublin in 1927
« on: Tuesday 11 October 16 09:53 BST (UK) »
Is there any way to find out any further information on who was living in this property in 1927, did Dublin have an Electoral Roll in 1927? My Mother in Law, Mary was born there to a Catherine Coen, who was a servant Derrymullem, Ballinasloe, present at the birth was Eileen Alexander. Mary was privately adopted shortly after.

Many thanks, Heather

According to newspaper ads it was a private maternity home between 1913 and 1924.

"Patients received into nurses house, attended during confinement. 18 Goldsmith Street"
In 1924 there is a death notice for Matilda Magill (85) at that address.

In the census she says she is a maternity nurse/nurse - 1911 has her in Geraldine St which crosses Goldsmith St.

and 1901

1910 has an advert for a front room to rent in 18 Goldsmith Street.

There are no more ads for maternity services after Matilda's death in 1924, by 1931 the address is a B+B. I wonder if Eileen Alexander was a daughter of Matilda Magill to have carried on after her death or someone hired to take over?
We have had a few threads now on these kind of places and they would have very probably organised the adoption as well.
Hope that helps

Thank you both for the replies. That is very interesting that 18 Goldsmith Street was a private maternity hospital and does seem to link in to where Mary was born. Sounds as the property still could have had that use in 1927.

Kind regards Heather

1911 census for 18 if the enumerator has the right sequence for the numbers was a 6 roomed house.
