Help identifying a shop in Lincoln circa 1923
« on: Wednesday 12 October 16 10:08 BST (UK) »
A long shot, but can anyone help me to identify the shop in this photograph?

It was almost certainly in the city of Lincoln.

The young man on the right was born in 1909. I suspect this photo was his first job out of school.

Above the door I can read:
[?? - a name? ending in -LL?]
Wines, Spirits, [??]
[??]
Dealer in Tobacco

Left-hand panel:
[Ag]ents for
Whit[??]
Al[??]

Right-hand panel:
Agents for
Shipstone's

I can make out bottles and jars in the window.

Underneath Wines, Spirits and Beer

Not to be drunk on the premises

Possibly:

Agents for Shipstone's Ales and Stouts

Agents for Whitbread's Ales

Dealer in Tobacco

 ::)

The name beginning with Whit, appears to have an s at the end. It may be a long surname such as Whitttakers, or is may be Whit??? and Sons. There is an Al below it which may be Ales.

I will have a closer look  later.

Added: Agent for Shipstones Ales on the right perhaps? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipstones_Brewery

The last letter of Whit looks like an R or D - my first though was Whitbread, though I am not sure if they were ever referred to as Whitbreads Ales.  :-\

Will look later .... :)

Thank you both. That Shipstone's Brewery seems very likely as a local company, and Whitbread is a strong possibility for the other panel.

Is that the name on the small  board above the older man's head. It's above wines and spirits, looks like in capitals. Maybe ending LL or even GGLE. It looks like a publicans/off licence declaration as seller of alcohol.
