In 1939, his occupation was Bus Driver, a skill which could be used anywhere in the world.

However, heading to Australia in the middle of the war seems very suspect. His skill could be used in the UK, even if he failed the medical for the services.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Hi everyone,

After reading your last email i thought i would peruse the first email his daughter sent to me. It goes like this:

When I was 15, he wrote to my mother saying he was going to look for work in Australia and would send for us to go when he got settled.   At that time he was working in Manchester for Metro Vickers building Lancaster Bombers.   Previously he had been in Southampton working for Vickers Supermarine building Spitfires.  (That was during the war)   He was only able to come home infrequently but when he moved to Manchester he came home about once a month.   I remember going down to visit him and he took me to the house of a lady with whom he was friend.

This was the "Joan" i was telling you about in my first request.

Hope this helps in some way? Take care every one and i really appreciate any "light" you may be able to throw on this second mystery. Best wishes, Shirley.

So, if his daughter was 15 (not 11) when they received the letter it must have been around 1946 (not 1942) and the war had ended.

Electoral roll for Australia shows an Edward Gregory Jones living at 14 Felicia Pl., Kelmscott, Canning, Western Australia in 1980 ??

The bit beside Edward's name in the 1939 NI Register is Police War Reserve Cumberland & Westmorland Cumberland. I know this man has the right date of birth but is it the right man? He's living in South Westmorland and has a wife Ada and is a bus driver. It seems a jump to building aeroplanes.

Added

Just seen your earlier posts and it appears to be the correct man and the bit about the police reserve ties in with mention of him being a policeman at some stage.

Yes, on his marriage certificate it states that he was a "bus driver" so yes, i think you have the right man, and his wife was Ada.

But where did he go to.............that is the BIG question?????
I spent the day again checking the "shipping indexes" but nothing to report. I also checked the marriage's in Australia.........but again nothing. :'(

Thanks again for all your help...Shirley.

Perhaps he went as crew to Australia and jumped ship when he got there? That way he wouldn't show on passenger lists.

Yes, i'm sure that could happen, but if he wanted to marry, surly that would be another matter? Shirley.
