Jane Richardson nee Garton St Neots Birth/Baptism Lookup please

Seeking a likely baptismal entry please for my ancestor Jane Richardson born as Jane Garton or Gartan. Husband was Henry Richardson. St.Neots area around 1804. She died in 1877 at St.Neots. Any details much appreciated. Thanks Rob

The only Garton in St Neots at around that time was baptised 2 Dec 1808 James son of John and Ann Garton, private Hunts Militia, born 29 Oct 1808. John appears to have married Ann Richerson in Eaton Socon on 8 Jun 1807.

There was a Jane Gardiner dau of William and Jane on 15 May 1806 but they also baptised Thomas on 17 Jun 1808 (born 29 Oct 1807)

1851 and 1861 give her birthplace as Eaton Socon Beds, but there's no likely Jane baptised there 1800-1810

But I see that the marriage shows her as Gardner, rather than Garton or Gartan. Do the birth certs of any of her children show her maiden name as Garton? If not where does the name Garton appear?

Hi David thanks for that information. Her death certificate in 1877 gives her surname as Gartan. Maybe her birth spelling is indeed different? Cheers Rob

Very odd! Her death is registered as Richardson and I've never seen an English death certificate of that vintage that gives a woman's maiden name.

Is it her maiden name - or a previous marriage?

Have you got a birth cert of a child to confirm her maiden name? Or her marriage cert to Richardson to see if she was single/widow/divorced, and to confirm her father's name?

Maybe in later life she lived with a Mr Garton and used his name? thus death registered under both names.  Who registered her death?

The 1825 marriage entry has been transcribed on the ESCAN site at http://www.escan.org.uk/Home/Search .  Jane was a spinster and unfortunately the witnesses, Richard and Robert Emery, don't provide a clue
