1871, John Hill
« on: Friday 14 October 16 16:17 BST (UK) »
John Hill was born c. 1802, probably in Hull.  In 1881 he was an inmate of the Hull Charterhouse, which he entered in 1880.  He died in 1890.  That's all I know.  So I'd be grateful for a look-up of the 1871 census or earlier for his occupation and address.
Thanks.

What did he give as his place of birth on the 1881 census?

I would check myself, but I can't find a John Hill, born c1802, in Hull on the 1881 census?

Nor can I, but we know he was there.  There's a John Hill in 1871 who fits, a widowed shipwright who's a lodger in Sculcoates.  That's as far as I can get without a subscription.

Hi,

Looking at the image for the 1881 of Hull Charter House there is a John Hill, widower, pensioner, age 78 born Hull, Yorks.

His name has been transcribed as Hull.

1871 - John Hill is lodging with Mary A Thompson (widow) and her children.  She is a charwoman - 6 Clappison Square.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks, both of you.  It makes sense - Clappison Sq was right next door to the Charterhouse.
