NSW: Arthur BRENTON, born 1833/34, Christchurch, Hampshire

An Arthur BRENTON arrived in Sydney, aboard the Cuzco, on 15/11/1877.

No personal details are known and it is hoped he was the gentleman mentioned in the caption whose parents were John BRENTON and Keturah BRENTON (nee WALDEN).  He had 8 brothers and sisters, Sarah, John, Thomas, Harriet, Henry, Jesse, Joseph and Jane.   I am also led to believe that he was the subject of a break-in reported in the NSW Pollice Gazette which apparently is available on Ancestry, although I cannot access it on my subscription.

I hope someone can unearth more information about him if the jigsaw pieces fit.

The police report (6 May 1908) says that his home was broken into by William Allan Goldie.

He was the victim.

The 1841 census has Arthur's surname as BRENTON with parents John and Keturah.

The news item has BENTON and the NSW Police Gazette has BRENTON.

The CUZCO landed passengers at Adelaide and Melbourne before it's arrival in Sydney 15 Nov 1877.  All passengers arriving at Melbourne are noted on the ships passenger list whether they disembarked or not.

Mistranscribed surname - another source has occupation Gentleman and Nationality English. Contracted to land, Sydney.

Doesn't appear to be your person of interest as the passenger was born c1852.

Seems to me unlikely that Arthur BENTON of Merewether (Newcastle, NSW) is the same person as Arthur BRENTON.
The Newcastle man is buried at Sandgate cemetery (Newcastle) listed with the surname BENTON which matches Jamjar's death index entry.

TROVE has an obit for him which gives his age as 73 thus b abt  1850.
