Ballintogher / Graigavern - Franklin
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 09:30 BST (UK) »
3rd great grandfather William Franklin is living at property 5Aa in Ballintogher in the 1842 Valuation Books.  I have traced that to what appears to be a house still standing, and in residence today.  I'd love to know who owns it now.

The next mention of a specific residence is in the Dog Licences for 1868.  All it says is Wm Franklin, Dog Licencee, 30/03/1868, Graiganerne (Graigavern), Ballybrittas, Queen's.  Dog's name Jep.

This could be the same William Franklin, aged 68, or it could be his son, also William Franklin.  I have no way of knowing.  Graigavern appears to be a very big house on extensive lands, and I am very inclined to doubt that my William Franklin had those kind of means.

Is there any history or information on Graigavern available, or any suggestion where I might find out more about the Wm Franklin who lived there in 1868?  The 1842 house in Ballintogher is just 1km away, on the same road.

Graigavern is also a townland, see link.

Have you looked at the censuses 1901 1911

What was his religious denomination?

I cannot link, as images are under paid subscription on Findmypast.  This is the reference to William Franklin in the Valuation Office Books, from Findmypast.

He doesn't appear on the Griffiths Valuation website, he doesn't appear in the post 1864 death registers, and I found no burial either.  The only other reference to Laois is the marriage of his daughter, where he is mentioned as living in Kilbrackan, a nearby townland.  I didn't cop that Graigavern was a townland as well as a house, thanks for that.

So he variously lives in Ballintogher in 1842, and Kilbrackan in 1864, and either he or his son in Graigavern in 1868.  No marriage appears for his son, but the Lea Church of Ireland registers aren't online, and I drew a blank when I tried to request to see them.

He was Church of Ireland, a Steward by profession, and police pensioner.

I just hoped someone might see a line of enquiry I missed.  Thanks all.

The link offered nearly three years ago to contact Rev.L Stevenson drew a complete blank - not even a response.  Hence I am little further on from that thread linked.
