Mary Nixon - where did she come from and where did she go?
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 18:01 BST (UK) »
In 1861 my gt grandmother (Mary A. Blower) is a servant in the Charles Neville household in Weston on Trent, Derbyshire. I'm wondering if she has a family connection to the Housekeeper - Mary Nixon (b. 1829) who is shown as born in an unknown location in Leicestershire.

But I can't seem to find Mary Nixon anywhere other than this 1861 census.

1861 UK Census: RG09 / 2489 / 110 / 3 (Weston on Trent, Derbyshire)
Mary Nixon - Housekeeper - unmarried - 32 - Farmer's Housekeeper - Leicestershire, N.K.

Can anyone help?

Hi Keyboard:

Yes, I've been researching that connection for a while now but was hesitant to bring those Nixons into it in this post. Benjamin also had a daughter - Mary - born around 1811. It's the Mary Nixon with her 1829 Leicestershire birth that I'm after here. I'm also stuck on that 1811 Mary Nixon so perhaps there is a connection between them.

1871 census, ages all over the place but a possible:-

Charles Nevill 40 b Derbyshire
Ann Nixon 60? b Shinstone, Staffs?
Matila Stone 7 Visitor Derbyshire
Census Ref RG10/2702/30/7

That's an interesting reference - not sure I've seen that one (although my methods aren't always consistent and my note taking can be a bit erratic  ;) ) - I'll follow that one up. Thank you.

EDIT see you have already answered the possibility of the 1851 on your earlier thread?

I've had more than a few earlier threads on my gt grandmother - Is this the one you refer to:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01io6/

It's been a tangle that I was hoping to approach through the Leicestershire Mary Nixon.

Thank you for your interest.

That is certainly an interesting record. Ann Nixon's age is not exactly clear but I read it as either 40 or 44 rather than 60. That would make her a more likely candidate for the Ann in the 1851 Benjamin Nixon family. I going to see if I can find Ann in 1861. If the age is 60 it makes her possible candidate for the Mary Nixon born 1811 in the Benjamin Nixon family.

I'm going to put an image of the ages on the Interpret Handwriting section of RC and see what others think.

I can't find Matilda in 1871. Is it possible she is the Matila Stone listed as a visitor on the 1871 census with Charles Nevill and Ann Nixon?

Whew - you are a whiz Keyboard  :) I can hardly keep up with you. That seems to tie up Ann Nixon (except for 1861) but how does the Mary Nixon, born Leicestershire fit in?

You have sure raised a lot of interesting connections Keyboard - Thank you again.

Hi again, well either Charles Neville keeps swopping Nixon House Keepers' b c 1829 Staffordshire/Leicestershire (1861) or they are one and the same person!

 ;D ;D Too true.

I'm also wondering if the Mary and Ann Nixon housekeepers are the same person. She had one illegitimate daughter living with her in 1861 (Mary Ann Nixon/Blower) and another illegitimate daughter living with her in 1871 (Matila Nixon/Stone). Perhaps as an unmarried housekeeper she needed to keep the relationships hidden.

As an interesting note when the 1861 census Mary Ann Blower marries in 1864, she gives her father's name as George Blower and marries someone with the surname Stone. When she remarries as a widow in 1871 her father's name is left blank.

I haven't seen the actual marriage record for Matilda Nixon in 1864 but i wonder who she puts for her father?

Complicated but fascinating - I guess its what makes the hobby so interesting.
