Census look up for Taits of Greenock
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 03:22 BST (UK) »
There are two census records I'm chasing.  James Tait in 1861 (b1840 Greenock).  I have his father's census (Robert), but James was a seaman and could have been anywhere.  Would census records have been taken for people at sea?

Catherine McPherson Tait (his wife) (aka Katharine, Kitty, Kate) b c1841.  I have James in the 1901 census but not Catherine.  She died in 1911.  I wonder if she could have been in hospital (?poorhouse, Smithston) on census night 1901.

Hi Sheena,

Re. Catherine's death, it can be searched on SP  (a bit of a nightmare at the moment) as it doesn't accommodate both names but you can search the index for the area which is now FREE.

There was no provision made for recording seamen who were at sea on census night.  If the ship was in Port somewhere there would have been a record.

Hi Sheena I can see the problem you are having trying to find them  ???  If Catherine was in the poor house she would have been recorded on the 1901 census ...

Hmm she doesn't appear with daughter Annie and William Blythe in 1901 - it was John Tait who was the informant on the death of father James   ???

Forgot to say Annie and William were living at 59 Belville Street Greenock Renfrewshire in 1901 - no sign of Catherine with family.
