David McAdams 1802-1881 and Hannah Creath 1807-1881 Belfast/Antrim?
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 15:50 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information on my 2nd great grandparents

I believe they lived in or around Belfast but that is based on the birth location given for one of their children.  David's birth year has appeared as 1800 and 1802 in Canadian records. I have been unable to find a death record for him but I believe he died after 1881 Canada census but before 1891.

His wife Hanna appears to have passed before the 1881 Canada census as David is widowed on the 1881 document

I know they were in Canada in 1861 but have not found an arrival year.

They had the following children

Mary Ann McAdams 1842–

Samuel McAdams 1845–

William John McAdams 1847–1935

Letticia McAdams 1848–1933

All the children were in Canada and I have marriages for all the children but incomplete info on the families after marriage beyond my direct grandparents and one other branch

Any assistance or suggestions much appreciated

David McAdams
London, ON Canada

James McAdams 1849–1935

Further feedback has indicated that Antrim may be incorrect but nothing definitive.

I have found David's death record.  He passed 24 DEC 1883 in Chatham, Kent, Ontario and age was given as 84 years so birth possibly 1799-1800.  Birth location only reported as Ireland and no parents listed.  He appears to have been with his daughter, Mary Ann McAdams and her second husband, Peter Woods as Peter is the informant on the death record.  They were living in Chatham, Ontario.  Cemetery searches have found no burial

Still no sign of Hannah after the 1871 Canada Census

Been away from research for a while.

Thanks for added research from folks here.

I do have some added info since original post

The children were, as noted

Mary Ann McAdams 1842– ?  Born Ireland according to census and marriage info in Canada but no specific location.  She married an Edward Kohl 1832-1883 and a Peter Woods  1813-?

Samuel McAdams 1845– Born Ireland 1845-1849 based on Canada census and marriage docs.  He married Ida Wilburn 1862-?

William John McAdams  1847–1935  Canadian death record says birth Belfast Ireland and spell mother's name as Kreith rather than Creath  He married Margaret J Weir 1855-1908

Letticia McAdams 1848–1933  She was born in or around Whitby,Ontario and her death record spells mother as Creith  She married John Sylvester Slocum 1849-1934  Letticia's death record lists mother as Letticia.  Mystery there.

James McAdams 1849–1935 Born Pickering, Durham, Ontario, Canada and mother name listed as Creath on marriage record.  He married Mary Douglas Thompson  1842-1912

On some records David was listed as MacAdams

Unable to find an arrival year as no census or other record lists anything.  Dates of Canadian children would seem to indicate they fled the famine.

Also wondering about his age when some children were born.  Were there possibly other children born earlier?  Would 40+ years be late for having children?

Just found a record on the Canada immigration site for a David McAdams (and family) arriving in 1845 and going from Toronto to Pickering.  That would fit location for son James' birth.  No image so far of that document and searching for Hannah or children gives no results.  Possibly not listed on arrival document?  So far no luck with 1851 census of Canada

It's a popular misconception that people leaving Ireland during that period left because of the Great Famine when in actual fact there were many parts of Ireland (such as a large portion of Ulster) that did not suffer from the potato blight. in any case, people living in Belfast rather than on farms were less dependent on agriculture.

Thanks for clarification on folks escaping famine.

Just saw a notation at  Riverview Cemetery in Wallaceburg Ontario "dtr of David McAdams of Ireland and Letitia ____ of Ireland. Wife of Albert and mother of William and Minnie"

Letitia McAdams Slocum
Birth 8 Aug 1848  Whitby, Durham Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada
Death 12 Feb 1933 (aged 84) Wallaceburg, Chatham-Kent Municipality, Ontario, Canada
Burial  Riverview Cemetery
Wallaceburg, Chatham-Kent Municipality, Ontario, Canada

So two references to Hannah as Letitia. However, Notation at cemetery may have come from the death record for daughter Letitia McAdams Slocum.

Thanks for all that information.  Much to review.

Samuel McAdams 1845-  Living London, Middlesex Ontario  Occupation Farmer is son Of David 1802-1881

William John 1847-1935 Living London, Middlesex Ontario  Occupation Farmer is son Of David 1802-1881  Some records have him as John and some William James  Headstone has Wm. J. McAdams but only lists him as wife of Margaret.  Does not list his information.  Wondering if family had no money in 1935 to have stone updated
