Ahern of Bruff, Limerick
« on: Tuesday 18 October 16 05:35 BST (UK) »
Help required for birth/baptism of Maurice Ahern in Bruff, Limerick c1819 as per army records.

We are researching a Maurice or Martin Ahern, who enrolled in  2nd. European Regt (Bombay) in 1839, who says that he was born in Bruff, Limerick.

We also found that he may have re joined militia (20th. Regiment) in 1842, age given as 23 and pensioned off the same year.

We believe that he was a guard on convict ship Wm Jardine  to Hobart as Chelsea Pensioner in 1850.

Any help much appreciated.

Pariah Register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0870
If he was RC.

Now that would be an interesting register...  :)

Very common surname for the general area so it may be hard to conclusively tie down any baptism you find, here is one example from 7th April 1818 from the RC parish of Knockany and Patrickswell (top of left page):

Why the fits of giggles?
In the words of an infamous Australian red-headed extremist politician:
please explain

Thank you for help to Parish records:
A possibility of Maurice Ahern's father:

The parish records of Fedamore, a village between Bruff and Limerick City, in the County of Limerick, Ireland contained the marriage of a Dennis Ahern and Grace McNamara on 20 Feb 1814. The witnesses were Dennis Kennedy and Timothy Ahern.

Possible baptism of Maurice/Martin Ahern

A search of the parish records of Bruff, Grange and Gilnorga, in the County of Limerick, Ireland showed no Maurice Ahern was baptised in the area. When Maurice later married in 1847, he used the Christian name of Martin. A search of the same parish records revealed that a Martin, son of Dennis Ahern and Grace McNamara, was baptised in Bruff on 13 Feb 1821. The sponsors at the baptism were Dennis Kennedy and Catherine McNamara.

One commonality possible friend of father Dennis Kennedy at both occasions.

gaffy already did, I wrote Pariah instead of Parish.
Still give me the giggles.

The Martin etc you found looks good. I guess the question now is does this Martin 'disappear' from the registrers which could be explained by him joining up.
