Jonathan MOYSES, Born c1840, Wisbech
« on: Tuesday 18 October 16 14:12 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Jonathan MOYSES was born Wisbech c1840 the son of Edward and Ann MOYSES.

I understand he was a Private in the 84th Foot 1st Battalion (York & Lancaster) in 1861 stationed either at Manchester or Aldershot.   I wonder if someone who has access to TNA WO12/8791 or similar index could help with his military career.   No record has been retrieved via Census etc.

Thank you,

BAC3

Do you mean you haven't found him in any census?

It looks like him in Wisbech age 1 with parents and (presumed ) sister Sarah aged 3 in 1841

There is also a prison record for a Jonathan Moyses of about same age. It says received from Wisbech 30 sept 1851 and father Edward, it seems he was discharged on licence in 1859. but address is Stannington or Hannington near Sheffield Yorks. Not sure if that was father's address or address Jonathan went to on discharge

Thank you LizzieL,

I have his 1841 Census and later Criminal Record, but it is post-1861 that is my main research area to try and ascertain what happened if he had remained in the army and possibly died in service abroad.   The latter may answer why there are seemingly no Census entries after 1861.

Yes, on wrong board (Resources which is not for queries) but one of the moderators will likely move it to the main Armed Forces board before too long  ;)
