French surnames
« on: Wednesday 19 October 16 04:46 BST (UK) »
My 3rd great grandmother's parents were immigrants  to the United States from France, so she said. She gave her maiden name as "DeHerrin" (no first names of parents). I have been unable to find this name although it may be a reference to place in Nord Pas de Calais. Any French out there that could help? I have asked a French friend and she suggested they were possibly Basque. Thanks for any help.

I am no expert, but to me the name seems more like Flemish or Dutch than Basque, and the community of Herrin in Nord Pas de Calais is in the area adjoining Flanders.
I think the name should probably be written "de Herrin".

Hi,

correct French would be d'Herrin, a more common name would be Henin.

Have you checked all available US records to see if this may have been spelled a different way in different records?  Her marriage record, death record, children's birth/marriage/death records, etc., all may help.  Also, try to see the actual image for yourself if possible rather than relying on transcription.  If an obituary exists for her, it may reference surviving siblings.

I have a copy of her death certificate and obit, no first names given of parents, only "DeHerrin" born France. No apparent siblings. I have never found a parent or sibling who lived near or with her as was common back then. I did find the name De Herrin as a Spanish name which apparently died out in the 16th-17th century, haven't found anything more recent than that.

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions so far.

Hi,

My 9th Great Grandmother was a De Hennin (born in London - 1638), but she is a descendant from French Huguenots from (Valenciennes and Sebourg area of Nord-Pas-De Calais, France).

The surname there varies from De Hennin, De Haynin to Denain.

Are there any immigration records in the US relating or Canada relating to your 3rd Great Grandmother, as they might help further?

Regards
Paul

I have been unable to locate immigration records. My 3x great grandmother was born in Illinois at the end of 1841. There are no birth records that early for Illinois. She also married at 14 so I only have the 1850 census to go by  and have not located her yet.  At this point, I think her parents may have been deceased or estranged by the time she married. (Lucia DeHerrin, born Dec 28, 1841, Olney, Illinois).
