I think it would certainly be considered as part of Glasgow now. I was actually married in Eastwood reg district which is now more closely identified with places like Giffnock and Newton Mearns which are slightly further to the south than Pollockshaws.

Could be that the district was partly in both counties, or it could be changes in the boundaries between one date and another.

I think it's now officially part of Glasgow.

Eastwood is the name of a parish in Renfrewshire, which contains Pollokshaws.
See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/RFW/Eastwood

You won't find it on any modern map because the modern maps only show towns, villages and other settlements, not parish boundaries :(

The other thing to remember is that local government in Scotland was completely reorganised in 1975. Any maps, reference material and so on after that date will usually only talk about the revised authorities, but for historical research you need to use the pre-1975 boundaries and county names.

That's why GENUKI is so useful - it is based on the real historical counties, not the post-1975 districts and the mercifully short-lived regions which were created in 1975 and abolished again 20 years later (Borders, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Fife, Grampian, Highland, Lothian,Strathclyde, Tayside) The names of Borders, Fife and Highland were retained after the regions themselves were consigned to the waste paper basket, but if you come across any of the others in that list, alarm bells should ring, because they are useless for family history research.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for that useful information re place names

I wish my notes were more organised

Its hard to jump from one site to another and I didn't realise how important it was to have written record of the placenames to refer back to

I have just been looking at a world family forum .my MacDermid s aren't on it yet so am noting it all down to email them

Ok I have now seen the 1841 census
kings street doesn't seem to be divided into houses so I did wonder if it was some kind of institution

But there are small lines between each family

Janet is down as aged 50(transcribed as 60) washerwoman

15 year old AgnesRenfrew is some kind of cotton worker like others on the same page

She may not be daughter of John macdermid

I.ll have another go at finding the censuses you've kindly listed to see her surname and if she is single on the original

I don't know if it's Scotlands people not working or me using wrong parameters not finding janet and Agnes even just beginning mcd in 1851 or 1861

Also wondering if John macdermid and Janet Renfrew could have been a second marriage as she was 38  by 1826

Janet mcdarmid is  head widow keeping house aged 60 in 1851
Her daughter Agnes is listed as daughter status is not written clearly but has same surname as mother so unlikely to be widowed      she is a power loom weaver aged 25

Spurred by that success will find #1861 too
